The first-ever Sperry tent was created by Steve Sperry, an accomplished sailmaker and owner of Sperry Sails in coastal Massachusetts. In 1979, Steve used the tools of his trade—sailcloth, Dacron, nylon line, stainless steel grommets—to create a tent. He topped his design with a pennant made from spinnaker cloth to catch the wind. Steve’s creation was a whimsical invention for a practical cause: to keep guests comfortable at a neighborhood party. Little did he know that this prototype would evolve into a full line of rental tents, and that their look and feel would create an international revolution in event tent expectations.

Steve’s son, Tim, took over ownership of Sperry Tents and incorporated it separately from Sperry Sails in 1996. As president of Sperry Tents, Tim has grown the company from one rental office in Massachusetts into a large family of nearly 50 licensed providers across the world. This growing reach is proof of the sailcloth tent’s—and the resulting brand’s—popularity and endurance. Today, Sperry Tents is still a family-owned enterprise, with Sperry Fabric Architecture, helmed by Steve’s other son, Matt, producing the tents and Tim overseeing the rental network. While the company has embraced new manufacturing technologies and canopy shapes, it continually prioritizes classic, timeless fabric design.
